Summary: A careers-advice film for school-leavers suggesting work on light industrial production lines as suitable for ex-schoolgirls.
Description: A group of girls is shown over a (Lyons) food factory and watch women engaged in jobs such as rolling miniature Swiss rolls, adding single cherries to iced cakes, packing ice cream tubs etc. After watching a tea-packing machine they talk over lunch to the leader of the 4 girls who work on it. Her talk contains some mention of the nature of the work and "opportunities for getting on" (classes in firm's time) but concentrates mainly on the social activities of herself and the other girls in the firm's social facilities and outside. Other mass-production jobs - including light-bulb testing, polishing gramophone records, inspecting, filling or labelling bottles etc - are suggested in a closing sequence. The advantages of all are summed up as congenial conditions (work sitting down, music), reasonable pay, good medical/social facilities and opportunities to make friends.
